•Ca1.02Sr1.98Al2O6:Dy3+ (1.0 mol% to 5.0 mol %) phosphors were synthesized by combustion method.•The photoluminescence and thermoluminescence properties of the prepared materials have been investigated.•Under 348 nm excitation, blue (λem = 473 nm, 484 nm) and yellow (λem = 573 nm) emission band obtained.•TL emission band observed in the range of 50 °C to 350 °C, maximum emission intensity observed at 185 °C.
