Abstract
•Observational studies showed an association between gut microbiota and depression, but the results were inconclusive.•We found that the Family Bifidobacteriaceae and its Genus Bifidobacterium had causal protective effects on MDD.•The development of probiotics containing Bifidobacterium might be promising for MDD treatment.
