A Modular Multi-port Converter for Distribution of Vessel Integrated Power System

The second generation medium voltage integrated power system (IPS) has a broad application prospect in future vessels. With the increase in the diversification of power-using equipment, the traditional unidirectional two-port converter could no longer meet the application requirements of the new generation IPS. Therefore, this paper discusses the application of MMC-based multi-port converter in vessel IPS by combining modular multilevel converter (MMC), dual active bridge (DAB) technology, and the input-series output-parallel concept. The converter can connect medium voltage DC bus, medium-voltage AC bus, and low-voltage DC power bus, and the introduction of DAB power channels can effectively suppress the inherent voltage fluctuation of MMC. The fundamental principle of the converter are introduced. A simple and feasible decoupling control method is proposed for the power channels composed of DAB. Finally, the function of the module multi-port converter and the feasibility of the control strategy are verified by simulation.
