•TAP was associated with spontaneous activity in the left MFG, PreCG, ITG, and right MTG.•Even in the general sample, people with higher levels of TAP showed more EDS.•TAP fully mediated the association of the left MFG activity, MFG-ITG connectivity, and PreG-MTG connectivity with EDS.
