•Video laryngoscopy is commonly used for awake tracheal intubation (ATI).•A non-inferior performance of the new C-MAC VS video stylet device versus the C-MAC video laryngoscope (VLS) for ATI in predicted difficult airways was hypothesized.•C-MAC VS showed the same efficacy, with shorter intubation time for performing ATI.
