•A novel model was developed to extract PV panels in large-scale PV systems.•PVNet outperformed other comparative models under various scenario conditions.•The model effectively extracted regions and boundaries of PV panel installations.•Area-wide mapping yielded more detailed PV footprints than the existing datasets.•PV panel segmentation has potential value for solving real-world problems.
