•CeO2 improved the O/Si to drive glass network rearrangement.•Some Ce4+ are reduced under the influence of magnetite and CeO2 crystal defects.•Most Ce ions are hidden in a frame-like network of aluminosilicate glass.•The loading limit to CeO2 is broken by adjusting Al/Si in granite.
