•The nonlinear blast response of one-way arching masonry walls is studied.•A combined methodology of laboratory testing and nonlinear modeling is presented.•The dynamic arching force is experimentally quantified.•Comparisons between the model and the test results show a good agreement.•The effect of the boundary conditions on the dynamic response is explored.
