摘要
•The analyzed protohistoric sculptural limestones from Provence derive from stone production sites geographically close (<20 km) from the places of discovery.•Lower Barremian limestones from La Fare Massif provided the stones of the Roquepertuse (∼4 km) and Rognac (∼7 km) sculptures.•The bust of warrior from La Cloche oppidum is made of Miocene limestones from La Couronne formation, likely extracted at or at vicinity of Hellenistic quarries (∼19 km).•The fragment of scapulary tunic from the Baou de Saint-Marcel oppidum is made of local early Pleistocene calcareous tufa.•The limestone forming the young male head from the Ziem Museum is likely to derive from outside Provence.•Advanced characterization (micropaleontology, petrography, geochemistry, physical properties) of regional limestones is the key for provenance issues.
