Coral stone-inspired superwetting membranes with anti-fouling and self-cleaning properties for highly efficient oil–water separation

•A gel-modified membrane was prepared, inspired by the biological coral stone.•The gel layer was firmly attached to the membrane.•The modified membrane achieved proactive repulsion of oil and capture of water.•The modified membrane exhibits outstanding performance for oil–water separation.
