•Layered K0.37Na0.18MnO2·xH2O with excellent crystallinity is synthesized.•The synergistic effect of K+ on Na+ in the cathode is demonstrated.•The formation of K8(SO4)(SO3OH)6 neutralizes alkaline rise near the cathode.•The layered structures are stabilized by co-doping.
