•We reviewed the huge potential of oleoside-type secoiridoid glycosides.•We believe that the synthesis of these compounds is difficult and not worth it.•We pointed out the prospect of semi-synthesis for oleoside and its derivatives.•We believe that non-natural derivatives have enormous potential.
