Green synthetic carbon quantum dots based on waste tobacco leaves and its application to detecting borax content in flour and its products

•CQD was synthesized by the one-step hydrothermal method using tobacco leaves.•The obtained CQDs have good water solubility, stability, and good sensitivity.•A fluorescence probe for borax was established with the CQDs.•The probe obtained satisfactory results when detecting borax in food.
