•δ13C temporal changes in Kaladgi Basin are similar to coeval global variations.•The topmost limestone formation of Badami Group is dated to 604 ± 25 Ma.•A depositional hiatus of >500 m.y. exists between Bagalkot and Badami Groups.•Depositions in Proterozoic basins of India continued at least until ∼ 600 Ma.
