•Influence of laser scan speed and powder layer thickness on stability of A20X single tracks was investigated.•Melt pool geometries were predicted using a FEM and measured experimentally.•Experimental grain sizes versus predicted cooling rates followed a power law relationship.•Shape, size, and volume fraction of second phase precipitates did not change with the LPBF parameters.
