•We study the effect of a 14-week paid maternity leave mandate in Switzerland.•Many firms already offered a similar benefit at the time.•The mandate increased subsequent fertility, but not employment and earnings.•The mandate’s effects differed across mothers in firms with and without prior leave.•Firms with prior leave passed on some of the resulting cost-savings to mothers.
