Is episiotomy preventative for severe perineal injury?

Third and Fourth-degree perineal tears are a major complication in vaginal childbirth and are more frequent in vaginal operative deliveries (VOD). The role of preventive episiotomy remains controversial. The present study aims to assess the benefits of episiotomy in prevention of severe perineal injury(SPI) and its role in VOD.
