APPENDIX S1: A three-dimensional, dynamic blue whale model for research and scientific communication: instructions for scaling and posing the model TABLE S1:Measurements used to validate the three-dimensional blue whale model. Historical measurements from similarly sized whales come from the Discovery Reports (Mackintosh & Wheeler, 1929), Chubb (1918), and Woodward (2006). For 12 of the 16 historical measurements, the proportions of the model fell within the observed range (shown in bold). Four measurements fell outside of the historical ranges. For these measurements, the model was adjusted and the measurements were retaken (Redone model measurements column). One additional measurement (depth of body at fin) was also remeasured after the model was adjusted. The measurements obtained from the Discovery Reports are numbered to simplify cross-referencing with the original document.
