Self-adaptive stage: an extremely important, but neglected stage for cut-harvest fruit and vegetables

Based on a comprehensive evaluation of the roles of various postharvest stages, we found that existing studies ignored the stage between postharvest and precooling, which was defined as the self-adaptive stage (SAS) in this study. SAS consumes several or even dozens of hours depending on the harvesting rate, distance from the field to the refrigerating house, transportation speed, efficiency of load and unload handling, waiting time for precooling, and so forth. This study aimed to propose a method suitable for SAS research after comprehensively analyzing the feasible conditions and activities during SAS. Further research points about SAS were recommended based on the research results on the SAS of postharvest broccoli. This review provided a comprehensive understanding of SAS. Hereby to complete the postharvest stages of fruit and vegetables, and to supplement the research gap in SAS. The final aim was to improve the storage quality of postharvest fruit and vegetables, especially for cut-harvest fruit and vegetables. Our study developed a new method for preserving fruit and vegetables during SAS to improve the freshness of cut-harvest fruit and vegetables.
