•Transition metal doped SnO2 nanocomposite were synthesized by hydrothermal method.•Effect of transition metal doping on morphology was investigated.•A sensitive and selective detection of cadmium and chromium ions was achieved.•Heavy metal ion detection greatly depends on morphology, adsorption sites and electrocatalytic activity of sensor.
