Epigenetic liquid biopsies: a novel putative biomarker in immunology and inflammation

Human circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) is released from dying cells and contains rich epigenetic information.Patterns of cfDNA methylation, fragmentation, and histone marks can reveal cell of origin and gene expression profile.We argue that immune cell-derived cfDNA can inform human immune processes that may not be accessible via blood counts or imaging.
