•Identification of individual animals has many important applications in ecology.•5 videos with 9 to 27 individuals (fish, pigeons, pigs) with several in each frame.•25 classification methods: linear, non-linear, ensembles and deep learning.•5 Feature representations: colour, shape, texture and two from deep learning.•Simpler models (linear classifiers) with the colour features give the best accuracy.
