•TiNb alloys were solution heat treated using a molten KCl as protective atmosphere.•Molten salt shield prevents oxidation of Ti-Nb alloys during heat treatment.•Martensitic phases were formed in the heat-treated Ti-Nb alloys.•Lowest elastic modulus was found after solution treatment followed by quenching.
