•Effect of magnetic-assisted laser polishing on additive manufactured Inconel 718 superalloy has been investigated for the first time.•Superior smooth surface with strengthen γ″ phase has been produced.•Mechanical properties enhancement with low residual tensile stress has been achieved.•Detailed micro-hump/valley evolution analysis has been examined by multi-physics simulations.
