Integrated analysis of transcriptome and proteome changes related to the male-sterile mutant MS7-2 in wucai (Brassica Campestris L.)

•In the late stage of mononuclear microspore, the tapetum of MS7-2 was abnormally expanded, resulting in the extrusion of microspores and the inability to undergo mitosis to form mature pollen grains, while the tapetum of MF7-2 degraded normally.•The differential expression of transcription factors related to anther and pollen development in MS7-2 may be related to anther abortion.•AHA9 and VHA-G3 related to ATP synthase were significantly down-regulated in MS7-2, which may lead to the formation of ROS by the combination of excess electrons and molecular oxygen. The accumulation of ROS in cells affected the PCD of tapetum.
