A global meta-analysis of pulse crop effect on yield, resource use, and soil organic carbon in cereal- and oilseed-based cropping systems

•Increase in grain yield due to pulses in rotation was greater in wheat than canola.•Pulses in rotation increased subsequent wheat yield in the order of lentil > pea ≈ chickpea.•Effect of pulses on yield was greater in a 2-year crop sequence than any other frequency.•Pulses in rotation did not change soil organic carbon in short-term.
