•We develop a conceptual model to examine user perceptions of ADM systems.•We reveal importance of transparency concern on trust, usefulness, and adoption of ADM.•The model includes perceived fairness, accountability, and privacy.•We use results from a large survey among Dutch citizens to capture public view.•We provide a comparative view of ADM systems for different application scenarios.
