•HT was implemented to detect potential water-bearing structures in tunnels.•Embedded water-bearing structures are identified in two synthetic numerical models.•Comparison was given between the steady-state and transient hydraulic tomography.•The reliable hydraulic properties were inverted by adding geological information.
