•This manuscript provides the case report of an indoor corpse, found inside a home.•Empty puparia of Synthesiomyia nudiseta was used as the forensic indicator to estimate the mPMI.•First record of the beetles Dermestes maculatus and Necrobia rufipes on human remains in Malaysia.•It is important to conduct further studies on necrophagous beetles to obtain better mPMI estimation.
