•Bio synthesis of CeO2 NPs were done by using Acacia Concinna fruit extract.•Adsorption of reactive blue dye by as synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles.•Kinetics, thermodynamics and isotherm models were studied for adsorption mechanism.•Antibacterial activity of CeO2 nanoparticles was studied by Broth dilution method.
