•The ionic COF had an high gold capture capacity from diluted aqueous solutions.•The gold capture process on the COF was extremely fast and highly selectively.•Freestanding nanopapers consisting of cellulose fibers and COF were prepared.•The nanopapers enabled efficient gold recovery from E-waste leaching solution.•The CF-COF nanopapers can be prepared with a relatively low cost.
