•Chronic corticosterone treatment induced hyperacusis and active sound avoidance.•DPOAE, cochlear CAP and acoustic startle reflex unaffected by corticosterone.•Corticosterone induced sound-evoked hyperactivity in auditory cortex.•Glucocorticoid receptors upregulated in auditory cortex by corticosterone.•Corticosterone disrupted the HPA axis and blunted the reactive stress response.
