•Interaction thermodynamics of BPQDs and BSA was systematically investigated.•BPQDs bound with BSA via stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 and quenched its fluorescence.•BPQDs efficiently reduced the α-helix structure content of BSA through concentration-dependent way.•BPQDs reduced the thermal stability of BSA and affected its biological function apparently.
