•A novel amidoxime functionalized hyper-cross-linked fluorene-9-bisphenol was prepared.•HCP-AO have a maximum sorption capacity of 234.46 mg/g.•Equilibrium can be reached within 240 min.•In the solution containing competing metal ions, HCP-AO is selective for U (VI).
