•Crataegi Fructus-derived carbon dots (CFCDs) were synthesized by pyrolysis method.•CFCDs can be used for pH sensing under extremely acidic conditions.•CFCDs serve as low-cost fluorescent probes for live cell imaging of various cells.•CFCDs exhibit good hemostatic effect after oral administration.
