The anxiety and depression status and related influencing factors in patients with type 2 diabetes: Why should we care

Background: It's been found that in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) may have higher level of negative moods, yet the anxiety and depression status and related influencing factors in patients with (T2DM) remain unclear.Methods: T2DM patients who treated in our hospital from June 1 to December 31, 2020 were selected, we used self-designed patient general information questionnaire, self-rating anxiety scale, and self-rating depression scale for investigation. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to analyze related influencing factors of anxiety and depression.Results: A total of 216 patients with T2DM were included, the incidence of anxiety was 43.52%, the incidence of depression was 44.91%. The average anxiety score of T2DM patients was (48.39 +/- 11.25) points, and the depression score of type 2 diabetes patients was (50.36 +/- 11.44) points. There were statistically significant differences in the anxiety and depression scores of diabetic patients in the four variables of education level, diabetes complications, diabetes health education, and the glycosylated hemoglobin level (all P < 0.05). Multivariate stepwise regression analyses indicated that diabetes complications and regular health education on diabetes are the main influencing factors of anxiety in patients with T2DM (all P < 0.05). Diabetes complications and glycated hemoglobin level were the main influencing factors of depression in patients with T2DM (all P < 0.05).Conclusions: Diabetes patients have higher levels of anxiety and depression; their anxiety and depression are affected by many factors. Medical staff strengthen the knowledge and health education, control the level of glycosylated hemoglobin of patients to reduce the level of anxiety and depression of patients.
