•A wide-field EMCCD camera-based alpha imaging system is presented.•An efficient near-real-time image processing algorithm is developed.•Fully automated removal of cosmic and thermal noise and locating alpha particle interactions in CCD images.•Comparison of counting efficiency with a photomultiplier-based alpha counter.•Demonstration of application by comparison to a micro XRF determined element map.
