Tunable ferroelectric auxetic metamaterials for guiding elastic waves in three-dimensions

In this paper, we conduct a computational investigation of both static and dynamic behavior of three-dimensional, dynamically tunable metamaterials. We consider the dynamical characteristics of metamaterials with effective Poisson's ratios varying among positive, zero, and negative values. We analyze their effectiveness in controlling elastic waves in all directions and investigate different avenues to tune their transmission characteristics by an application of external loads, effects of poling, and a combination of the two. We demonstrate the utility of the metamaterials through tunable multiplexing and guiding of waves at different frequencies. Our findings can open the door to advanced multi-functional and robust acoustic devices.(c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
