Characteristics of trichotillomania and excoriation disorder across the lifespan

•Individuals with trichotillomania, excoriation disorder, and both conditions share many characteristics with high rates of co-occurring disorders.•Among individuals with both trichotillomania and excoriation disorder, there is significant positive correlation between hair-pulling and skin-picking severity as well as hair-pulling and skin-picking subtypes.•This cross-sectional data suggest that hair-pulling and skin-picking severity peaks at the transition to adulthood and hair-pulling/skin-picking styes shift across the lifespan.
