•The baseline developmental gap impacts treatment response.•Respecting the child’s timing after fast behavioral synchronization and a decrease in child’s withdrawal predict better outcomes.•Combining baseline and interaction features had the best predictive performance.•Changes in the first months of therapy may be particularly relevant.
