Solid electrolyte membrane-containing rechargeable high-temperature molten salt electrolyte-based batteries

Utilizing a rechargeable high-temperature molten salt electrolyte-based battery (HT-MSB) is a promising approach for large-scale electrochemical energy storage using low-cost and earth-abundant materials. Solid electrolyte membranes have been adopted in a variety of HT-MSBs, including sodium-sulfur and sodium-metal halide batteries, liquid metal batteries, and molten air batteries to improve the battery performance. In this review, we summarize the various types of solid electrolyte membrane-containing HT-MSBs, underline the significance of molten salts and solid electrolyte membranes as well as their synergy and interaction, and discuss the advantages of high-temperature batteries. We expect that this review can provide a new viewpoint for improving battery architecture and enhancing battery performance, as well as the advantages of HT-MSBs for future multi-energy complementary integrated energy systems.
