•CVI-mAb significantly increased M2-type macrophage differentiation in atherosclerotic mice.•CVI-mAb treatment could induce M2 macrophages to differentiate from S100a6+ Ccr2+ macrophages to Lyve1+ Abca1+ macrophages.•CVI-mAb induced Lyve1+ M2-like macrophages had functions of phagocytosis and lipid transport.•CVI-mAb induced Lyve1+ M2-like macrophages could reduce plaque areas in Apoe-/- mice fed high-fat diet.
