Optimal Sizing of BESS for Peak Shaving in a Microgrid

This paper presents the application of a methodology with the objective of sizing a battery-based energy storage system (BESS) for the reduction of load peaks for an industrial load connected to a microgrid and considering different billing periods. Case studies are presented considering different load profiles and the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology implemented for the sizing of the BESS and the reduction of energy purchase costs and the reduction of demand charges, under different levels of peak shaving.
