•The stocks and flows of 7 plastic polymers were mapped in Norway from 2000 to 2050.•Packaging makes up 40% of plastic put on the market and 55% of the waste generation.•Plastic put on the market and waste generation will increase by 65% and 90% by 2050.•Plastic waste management should be designed specifically for each industrial sector.•Systematic polymers classification facilitates successful plastic waste management.
