Predicting functions of putative fungal sesquiterpene synthase genes based on multiomics data analysis

•Product profiles of fungal sesquiterpene synthases are predicted using multiomics.•Cyclic sesquiterpenes of non-cadalane type are correctly assigned to genes.•Functions of duplicated genes are discriminated based on their expression profiles.•Nerolidol and α–cuprenene synthases are functionally characterized in Laccaria bicolor.
