Laser Beam Absorption Measurement at Molten Metal Surfaces

•Laser absorption measurements of steel at high temperatures were enabled.•Theoretically predicted trends of absorption at high temperatures were validated.•Increasing absorption occurs between melting and boiling temperature.•An absorption drop appears around boiling temperature.•At temperatures above boiling, intraband absorption dominates.
