Creep-fatigue of P92 in service-like tests with combined stress- and strain-controlled dwell times

•Complex dwell-fatigue (DF) experiments with ε- and σ-controlled dwells are compared.•They combine various stress relaxation and creep phases within each fatigue cycle.•Differences in softening/kinematic behavior and damage mechanisms are discussed.•They question the common approach of ε-controlled dwells in creep-fatigue testing.•Limited transferability of results should be considered in design of DF experiments.
