Single atomic ruthenium in WO3 boosted hydrogen evolution stability at Ampere-level current density in whole pH range

•A single atomic ruthenium doped tungsten trioxide (Ru-WO3) was constructed.•The Ru-WO3 can be applied to HER in wide pH range.•The as-prepared electrode shows excellent HER activity and stability at high current density (1 A cm−2).•The strong interaction through electron transfer from W to Ru optimized the hydrogen adsorption energy.•The stability can be enhanced by the strong interaction among Ru and W.
