A retrospective analysis of surgical, patient, and clinical characteristics associated with length of stay following elective lumbar spine surgery

•Length of stay following elective lumbar spine surgery is highly procedure specific.•Several factors were found to be associated with length of stay.•Age, BMI, antidepressant use, and operating surgeon were associated with LOS.•These factors should be used in future predictive modelling.•Selection for multivariable modelling was clinically driven.
