•Proposed a novel generalized intra- and inter-class kernel constraint (IIKC).•IIKC focused on improving the separability and margin between nearby data points.•IIKC can be directly embedded into LDA algorithms, with no increase of dimension.•Extensive experiments showed the effectiveness of the proposed IIKC.
